What is the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005?
The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDVA) is a law that provides legal protection to women facing abuse within a domestic relationship. Unlike criminal laws that mainly focus on punishing the offender, this Act aims to provide immediate civil remedies to the aggrieved woman. A Magistrate may grant reliefs such as Protection Orders, Residence Orders, Monetary Relief, Custody Orders, and Compensation Orders. The Act also recognises different forms of abuse, including physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and economic abuse, ensuring comprehensive protection for women.
