What is permanent alimony?

This is different from interim maintenance — it's the maintenance ordered at the time of, or after, the final divorce decree. It can be a one-time lump sum or ongoing periodic payments, and it continues until the recipient's death or remarriage. It's governed by Section 25 of the Hindu Marriage Act, and unlike interim maintenance, it's meant to be a longer-term arrangement.
