Can a husband claim maintenance?
Yes, but in a much more limited way. Only Section 25 of the Hindu Marriage Act allows this, because it's written to apply to "either party" to the marriage, not just the wife. HAMA (Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act) and Section 144 of BNSS are drafted specifically for the wife, so a husband can't use those, which means a husband cannot claim maintenance under the Hindu Adoptions and Maintenance Act, 1956 or Section 144 of the BNSS (Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita). In practice, courts do grant maintenance to husbands under S.25 if he genuinely has no independent income and the wife is financially better placed.
